Amit Mukherjee is an Assistant Professor in the International Strategic & Security Studies Program & Conflict Resolution and Peace Research Programme, at the School of Conflict and Security Studies in National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. His work involves use of GIS and Remote Sensing systems for national and international strategic security. His areas of research interests include homeland security, counter insurgency, terrorism studies, maritime security, weapons and warfare, military affairs and strategy, border security, and India-Israel security cooperation. He was previously a PBC-Post Doctoral Fellow at National Security Studies Center, University of Haifa, Israel, from 2013-2016, where he was also a Research Fellow (2016-2019 / non-resident & honorary). His research work focused on India-Israel strategic relations. He was actively involved in overseeing academic work of several International Students in the research group of the center. He was also an Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Defence & Strategic Studies in North Maharsahtra University for the year session 2020-2021.
Some of his publications include research articles (work) on application of fuzzy-logic based method for international space cooperation, published in ISPRS. An article on comparative classification techniques in Geospatial analysis for defence applications, published in Geo-Eye, and a book chapter on GIS for Strategic Studies which is under acceptance. He is currently teaching credit / audit courses for PhD scholars on GIS for Strategic Studies, War & Warfare (Theory of War, Generations of Warfare, Terrorism / Counter Terrorism, Non-Traditional Security), and Modeling for Conflict Resolution. He has earlier taught masters level course in Defence and Strategic Studies on - Disaster Management in India, Nuclear Biological and Chemical Warfare, India’s Land Border, Regional Security Issues, Modeling in Strategic & Security Studies.
He has a PhD on, “Application of GIS for India’s Defence: To assess battlefield conditions and its effects on weapons and weapon systems”, University of Pune. Apart from this, he has a Masters in Computer Science, and has received GIS & Remote Sensing training at various institutes including NRSC Hyderabad, IIT Chennai, C-SAG & IIITB Bangalore, India, among others. Through his multi-disciplinary approach he aims to integrate knowledge based platforms to find solutions for security challenges at National, International and Regional dimensions, using concepts of Defense and Strategic Studies, Theoretical approaches & Modeling in IR, Security and Conflict Resolution Studies, GIS (Military GIS) & RS and Information Technology. He has been a member of the UN Statistic Division project phase I on 'Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure' led by GWF-Noida, under a NIAS-GWF MoU 2020, representing NIAS.
Dr Amit Mukherjee has been designated as a member of the Thematic Group-Strategic Technologies for the jointly initiated process of formulating India’s new Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (STIP 2020), by the Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India (Office of PSA), New & Emergent Technology Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Apart from this he has received several letters of commendation for meritorious work and research contributions from various institutions that include University of Allahabad, University of Haifa and Israel–Asia Chamber of Commerce.
