Abstract: Nuclear energy will play an enhanced role in ensuring energy security and helping mitigate climate change. Beyond providing clean energy, nuclear technology has a range of societal applications, from health care to agriculture and industry. These developments are likely to increase the movement of radioactive materials across the country. An accident or incident could arise from illegal transport of these materials or from them falling into the hands of illegitimate users. We need to ensure the safety and security of these radioactive materials. NIAS is collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to build the capacity of security agencies, improve their knowledge of radioactive materials, and help them handle such emergencies appropriately. The talk discusses about the work being carried out as part of this collaboration.

About the speaker: Prof Sai Baba is an accomplished researcher, scientific administrator, and institutional builder, making significant contributions to implementing several high-impact activities for the DAE. An Outstanding Scientist and former Director of the RMG, IGACR and was a Senior Professor, HBNI and Dean of Student Affairs. He served as the Registrar and Director of the Centre for Professional Development and Training of Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences.

At NIAS, he is working in the domains of Science and Risk Communication, focusing on understanding the HRP issues across industries of national importance in a collaborative program with Texas A&M University, and on Capacity Building for handling nuclear and radiological materials (collaborating with ORNL) to strengthen and expand training for the security agencies.
