About the Event
The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) will hold a commemorative event marking one year since the passing of Dr. K. Kasturirangan (25 April 2025).
Dr. Kasturirangan’s association with NIAS was defined by his intellectual leadership, institution-building vision, and deep commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry. This occasion brings together colleagues, students, collaborators, and friends to remember his life and reflect on the enduring influence of his work.

KASTURI: Knowledgebase of Archaeology and Heritage using Spatial Technologies: a Unified Resource for India
A web-GIS portal developed at NIAS in collaboration with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) and hosted on ISRO’s Bhuvan platform, the KASTURI Portal integrates space-based technologies, archival sources, and field research into a unified, interactive platform for understanding India’s cultural landscapes.
The portal currently features 20 cultural landscapes from its pilot phase and is being expanded into a larger national resource. Named in his honour, it carries forward Dr. Kasturirangan’s vision of integrating science, technology, and heritage into a shared national resource.
