About the Lecture:  More than 130 radical Vachanakaras formed a new Sharana community that came to be known as Lingayata, in 12th century Karnataka, What did these men and women express in their Vachanas? What were the foundational tenets of this community extracted from their diverse experiential poetry? How has it evolved further in the last 900 years? These are some questions the speaker will explore in this brief talk. 

About the Speaker:  Prof. Shivanand Kanavi has written extensively on Science, Technology and Business as Executive Editor of India’s pioneering business magazine, Business India. He is keenly interested in Indian history, philosophy and political economy and frequently writes about them. He has written a widely acclaimed award-winning book "Sand to Silicon: The amazing story of digital technology" on the birth and evolution of Digital Technology and seminal Indian contribution to it. He has also edited a marquee book "Research by Design" on R&D and Innovation in TCS. 

About the Chair:  Prof HS Shivaprakash is also a Kendra Sahitya Akademi award winning poet, playwright, translator and Director of Tagore Centre, Berlin. He has translated many Vachanas of 12th century Sharanas and written and lectured extensively about Lingayata and other Bhakti traditions of India.
