Abstract: Guided Nature Walks (GNW), which involve observing and exploring the natural surroundings with an experienced guide through interactive discussion and interpretation, are increasingly recognised as spaces for public engagement with biodiversity and science. Despite their growing presence in urban environmental initiatives and nature-based activities, GNWs remain relatively understudied within science communication research, particularly in India.
This talk examines GNWs as informal science communication spaces that facilitate public engagement with science and biodiversity. Drawing on academic literature, media discourse, and organisational practices in India, it considers how these walks translate scientific understandings of nature into lived, place-based experiences through observation, interpretation, and dialogue. Particular attention is given to Bengaluru as a rapidly urbanising city where GNWs are increasingly being used to connect people with local biodiversity and environmental issues. The talk discusses the potential of GNWs to strengthen connections between people, biodiversity, and scientific ways of understanding the natural world.
