Abstract: In the tapestry of our lives, we weave different threads that make our lives meaningful. A thread of myriad hues that deeply interlaced with me personally and professionally was that of Prof R L Kapur, often fondly referred to as RLK. It is my privilege to deliver this oration in his memory, from the perspective as his student. He touched the lives of countless students like me, encouraging us to explore the complexities of mental health. He knew each of us, identifying our individual needs and strengths. RLK fostered a stimulating academic environment, engaging us in thought provoking discussions and debates while also encouraging us to challenge existing beliefs and dogmas. This ensured that learning occurred in a stimulating and creative environment that was at the same time a supportive one. RLK taught us how to think, not what to think. He broadened our gaze, beyond the biological frameworks, integrating psychosocial aspects of psychiatry in teaching. He was instrumental in establishing the first community psychiatry unit in NIMHANS. RLK was a relentless learner himself, always exploring complex, unchartered territories like unravelling the psychology of terrorism and researching the lives of rishis and sadhus. His legacy endures through his students, many of whom like me deeply cherish his personal warmth and caring mentorship, inspiring us to fathom the intricacies of mental health through a holistic lens. In this oration Dr R Raguram will delve into his seminal contributions as an inspiring teacher and researcher.
