About the film:
Hottege Hittu | Subsistence, a Kannada documentary film set in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district, where small farmers live with uncertainty as rains become unpredictable, soils weaken, and chemical farming deepens debt.
The film follows a quiet return to older rhythms through ragi cultivation, mixed cropping, and native seeds. At the heart of this shift are women farmers, seed keepers, and caretakers of the land whose labour and knowledge continue to sustain agriculture.
Through everyday conversations and lived experiences, the film reflects on debt, migration, changing rain patterns, and acts of care such as saving seed, composting, sharing, and experimenting with traditional farming methods. The film traces a slow rebuilding of soil, food, and dignity rooted in collective memory and the resolve to farm for sustenance before surplus.

Sumukh is a Mysuru based photographer, documentationist, and filmmaker
A.R. Vasavi, a Social Anthropologist, was previously with NIAS and is currently a member of the Punarchith Collective.
