Abstract: Any system is greater than the sum of its parts due to fundamental principles such as organization and emergence. Therefore, we need more than a reductionist perspective to understand a system. For a complex system like the gut microbiota, conceptualizing a holistic perspective can be challenging. Using systems theory, a framework is proposed to abstract the system's organizational stability and emergence. Since this framework can be applied beyond the gut microbiota, I look forward to improving it and exploring new application possibilities in different system settings during our discussion.
